A refresher course on how the merit badge system works:

Troop 21 is very fortunate to have an active Merit Badge Counselor program. This Counselors list is very handy for completing almost all popular merit badges. As counselors and parents of Troop 21 scouts please keep the following points in mind:

#1. Choose a merit badge; get the book and read the book-compeletly.

#2. Find a counselor and let him/her know in advance that you want to meet and work on the badge. Work with a buddy if outside the Troop meeting area. Read the book.

#3. Understand each requirement and do it as listed. Counselors are not supposed to feed you the badge requirements; you are to read and learn about the activity. Read the book.

#4. Try to use someone other than mom and dad. Read the book.

#5. A Blue Card must be signed by the Scoutmaster prior to starting a badge and signed off ONLY when complete. Read the book.

#6. Realize that some badges are sort of age specific, like Citizenships and Personal Management. Read the book.

#7. Be careful of Trail to Eagle Camps. These camps are a valuable resource but, be sure your son does all requirements and understand the subject of the badge. Read the book.

#8. Do some fun badges; there is always time for the required ones. New hobbies or life interests can be found in the merit badge game. Yes, read the book.

#9. Interested in a merit badge not offered by T21? Suggest it and we can add it to our Monday night program. Read what?

#10. After all requirements are completed, get the signed Blue Card (signed by both the counselor and the Scoutmaster on all parts of the Blue Card) to our Advancement Chair and keep your copy for a permanent record. Many Eagle candidates have been asked to show proof of a merit badge.

When you have completed a badge please donate your book to our Troop Merit Badge Library.
