T21 Memorial Day Flag Placement
For the first time, Troop 21 will be participating in the Memorial Day Flag Placement Ceremony. It's a spectacular and uplifting way to start the Memorial Day weekend!
We will be joining with Scout troops from across Los Angeles to place flags on over 85,000 graves at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood (adjoining the 405 freeway). Local and National Officials will address the scouts for approximately 30 minutes. Then the Boy and Girl Scouts will fan out across the five acre site placing American flags on each grave in their assigned area. In 15 minutes, all graves are adorned with flags. The troop needs to meet early, but by about 9:15am the
event is over, so it doesn't interfere with other plans for the 3-day weekend.
This is a great family outing!
Specifics:
Meet at Paz Naz on Saturday, May 26, at 6:00am, leaving at 6:15am.
Class A uniforms must be worn by leaders and scouts. We will bring the troop flag, where it will represent us onstage during the presentation.
Boy and Girl Scout participation in the observance of Memorial Day is considered a nationally significant event and occurs concurrently at Fredericksburg National Military Park, Arlington National Cemetery, and at Jefferson Barracks (St. Louis). Without Scout involvement, there would be almost no organized observance of Memorial Day. "Traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember proper flag etiquette for the day. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country."
Troop 21 will be a notable exception and will proudly participate by honoring the American soldiers who have given their life in battle. We hope you will be able to join your troop there. Sign up will be on the Monday night meeting. There is no cost. All Scouts receive one service hour.
