Backpacking in the Sierras in mid-August
We have a reservation to backpack the John Muir Trail from Sunday, August 16 thru Wednesday, August 19. Our adventure will start at Agnew Meadows campground (about three miles from the Mammoth Mt ski area). From there we will backpack to Ediza Lake and set up camp for two days, then head out on the John Muir trail and end up at the Devils Postpile National Monument.
This moderate rated backpacking trip is about six miles in and eleven miles out. Elevation of Ediza Lake is 9,275 feet. Activities include Fly-fishing, photography, and hiking. This is Ansel Adams Wilderness so the scenery for sightseeing and photography is breathtaking. There is plenty of stream and lake fishing spots holding rainbow and brookies about 6-11 inches. We will practice catch and eat fishing.
This is open to all boy scouts and adults, but space is limited. The reservation is for 15 people, four have already signed up. Practice hikes will be required. Cost is about $10 for permit fee and tram ride. Sign up with Rusty Watkins Friday at the Court of Honor or e-mail him. If your slightly interested, but not sure, let him know!
White Water Rafting on the Kern
June 19th and 20th Troop 21 families will be rafting and kayaking on the Kern River. We will drive up on Friday and camp overnight at a nearby campground. Saturday will be a whole day of water fun.
Rafting and kayaking is under the guidance of Sierra South Company (www.sierrasouth.com). Cost is $45-55 for rafting and $105-$116for both rafting and kayaking. A scout who meets the prerequisites can earn their Whitewater merit badge during this day of fun. See JoBea Holt for more information.
