High Sierra Trip Tips

Make sure your pack is no more than 30% of your body weight.

What to Pack (and not to pack):

Clothing:

Do not bring jeans in your pack if you have a choice, they are too heavy and offer no insulation. Do not bring cotton sweat shirts. Pack one set of clothing in a separate bag to change into after you shower and for the trip home.

  • Waterproof your boots
  • Nylon long sleeves shirt (Wind Shirt)
  • Lightweight gloves
  • Polypropylene long underwear (No Cotton)
  • Micro fleece clothing (Jacket)
  • Sandals or old sneakers
  • Hiking socks and liners (3 prs. Ea.)
  • Nylon or synthetic materials clothing (Pants, nylon convertible type)
  • Rain gear - light weight poncho or jacket with pants (Coated nylon or Goretex).

First Aid:

  • Items in the personal first aid kit in your Scout Handbook
  • Knuckle bandage
  • Triangular bandage
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Tylenol or asprin, or ibuprofen (bring about 12)
  • 3 foil packs of alka-seltzer
  • benadryl
  • neosporin
  • 1 roll of 2" cling gauze
  • TUMS or Rolaids
  • Your daily medicine - must be given to an adult leader for administration, prepare an instructions and dosage page, medication must be in prescription bottles w/ doctors instructions attached.

Hygiene:

  • Insect repellant
  • Sunscreen (min. SPF 30)
  • Camp suds
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Toilet paper
  • Wash cloth
  • Sunscreen for lips (min. SPF 30)
  • Sunglasses 100% UVA/UVB protection
  • Cap (baseball type preferred)

Misc. Items:

  • Water purification tablets
  • Water - take one wide mouth water bottle
  • Spare light bulbs
  • Pack cover (or a heavy duty 30 gallon trash bag)
  • Ground cloth (7x4)
  • Sponge and towels for dishes and pots
  • 3 large ziplock bags - 1 for trash, 1 for smelly socks
  • small sewing kit
  • parachute cord
  • Use web straps with buckles to tie things onto backpack.
  • Fishing gear

10 Essentials:

Put your 10 essentials into a stuff bag

  • Map
  • Compass
  • Extra water
  • Extra food
  • Flash light
  • Extra batteries
  • Pocket knife
  • Fire making items
  • Whistle

Cook Group:

Each group is to decide what utensils are needed for your cooking. Coordinate with your group to determine who brings what - do not duplicate. Each cook group should bring one spade.
