Backpacks
External frame backpacks will usually be the best choice for scouting. They will be cooler, less expensive, and lighter than most internal frame pack. Renting, again, is a good way to try out alternatives to see what you like, or start by borrowing a troop pack. Used packs can be a great buy. You MUST HAVE webbing straps will buckles to attach your sleeping bag and pad to your pack. They should be at least 42 inches long. No bungee cords, rope, or string, unless you're older than 18.
